Joint committee members need to understand their responsibilities and powers precisely and be careful not to overstep their authority, said U Aung Lin Dwe, Speaker of the Pyidaungsu Hluttaw and Amyotha Hluttaw. He made the remarks at a meeting with member of the Joint Bill Committee and the Joint Public Accounts Committee held at the second-floor meeting hall of the Pyidaungsu Hluttaw building in Nay Pyi Taw on June 3.
Hluttaw representatives will be able to enact laws to ensure that the state’s money and budget are not wasted. Joint committees should be particularly aware that inviting officials from ministries and organizations to discuss and question them when scrutinizing and presenting bills and reports is an oversight function of the Hluttaw, and is a means of gathering information to ensure that the work is carried out more effectively, said U Aung Lin Dwe, Speaker of the Pyidaungsu Hluttaw and Amyotha Hluttaw.
In addition, he said that care must be taken to ensure that relevant officials are not interrogated in a manner that is similar to an investigation, and that committee members who will be responsible for such important tasks must be able to thoroughly study all Hluttaw laws, rules, and other related laws.
