The Department of Basic Education said that over 2,500 basic education schools were damaged by the Mandalay earthquake. There are over 46,000 basic schools nationwide. Some of the damaged schools will need major repairs, while others will need minor repairs. Some school buildings will need to be demolished and rebuilt.

The state has planned temporary school buildings to ensure that students can study comfortably during the academic year, said U Soe Aung, assistant director of the Department of Extracurricular and Lifelong Education. (Interview)
The enrollment period for the 2025-2026 academic year is set from May 22 to June 1, and more than 7 million students are expected to enroll nationwide.
