The Ministry of Electric Power has responded that the Tha Htay Hydropower Project, which is being built on Tha Htay Stream, about 12 miles northeast of Thandwe, Rakhine State, will be completed quickly if the region becomes peaceful.
If the projects are carried out normally, they will be completed in the 2025-2026 financial year, but due to the security reasons in the region, the project staff had been evacuated at the end of April 2024 and the projects were temporarily suspended. The response said that the suspension of the project has reduced the country’s power generation and has also caused losses in electricity revenue. In addition, it was also reported that electricity consumers are losing 386 million kilowatt hours of electricity annually from the Tha Htay Hydropower Project.
The response also stated that since the damage to the project buildings, construction materials, staff houses could not be inspected so far, the project work could only be completed quickly if the area was peaceful. The Tha Htay Hydropower Project has an installed capacity of 111 megawatts and will be able to generate and distribute electricity to the southern regions of Rakhine State, and the surplus electricity will be distributed throughout the country through the power grid, the Ministry of Electric Power replied.
