In order to achieve an equilibrium climate and provide more forest ecosystem services, Chairman of the State Administration Council Prime Minister Senior General Min Aung Hlaing has ordered covering up to 50 per cent of the country with forests.
At the first rainy season tree planting ceremony of 2025 held in Nay Pyi Taw on June 15, all relevant departments, local authorities and organizations were ordered to carry out this as a national duty. Myanmar’s forest coverage reached 42.92 per cent of the country’s area in 2015, 42.19 per cent in 2020 and 42.15 per cent according to the preliminary report in 2025, showing some deforestation.

In its tenure, deforestation has decreased significantly year-on-year due to the current government’s supervision of tree growing and conservation of forests in order to notably minimize deforestation impacts yearly, said Senior General Min Aung Hlaing. The country has distributed and planted more than 90.55 million seedlings across the country from the rainy season of 2021 to the rainy season of 2024, and in Nay Pyi Taw, more than 320,000 seedlings were planted during 9 tree planting events.
Of these, more than 300,000 seedlings survived, with a 94 per cent success rate.
