The existing electricity generation projects have not been implemented for various reasons, leading to an insufficient electricity supply, said Chairman of the State Administration Council Prime Minister Senior General Min Aung Hlaing. He made the remarks on the second day of the State Administration Council Government work coordination meeting held on May 20.
Senior General Min Aung Hlaing said that the country’s electricity demand is not met yet, and development projects cannot proceed as planned in the absence of electricity as they should. If the Myitsone Hydropower Project had not been suspended, it would have been able to generate roughly 6,000 megawatts, and if the existing power plants and the Myitsone Hydropower Project were combined, it would not only meet but even exceed the electricity demand. He said that hydropower projects can be implemented on rivers flowing within the country, but in some places, projects have been halted due to security reasons, therefore, it is necessary to find and implement them where they can be carried out.

Hydropower can also be generated by building low-head dams. Solar power generation should be implemented, and small-scale solar power plants should be built in regions and states, Senior General Min Aung Hlaing said. In addition, Senior General Min Aung Hlaing said that it is necessary to formulate and implement a mandatory policy on renewable energy.
