In Taunggyi Township, Shan State (South), a man was found guilty of spreading propaganda on social media with the intent to disrupt the multiparty democracy general election. The Taunggyi Township Court sentenced him to seven years in prison with labor, according to the National Defense and Security Council Information Team announcement on September 9.
On August 25, Ko Nay Thow, the owner of the Facebook account “Lashio Baegyi”, who lives in Ward (1) of Aye Tharyar, Taunggyi Township, was arrested and charged with writing on his social media page to sabotage the election by criticizing the car robbery incident that occurred in Lashio City. The writings of Ko Nay Thow, the owner of the Facebook account “Lashio Baegyi”, contain extremely vulgar terms.

Therefore, a case was opened against Ko Nay Thway at the Taunggyi Township, Aye Tharyar Police Station under Section 23(a) of the Law on the Prevention of Disruption and Sabotage of Multi-Party Democratic General Elections and was transferred to the Taunggyi Township Court. Nay Thwe was found guilty on September 9 after being tried in the Taunggyi Township Court under Criminal Case No. 2714/2025 and sentenced to seven years in prison with hard labor under Section 23(a) of the Law on the Prevention of Disruption and Sabotage of Multi-Party Democratic General Elections, according to the statement.
It is prohibited to deliver a speech, speak, organize, protest, or distribute any written material to disrupt the general election process or any part of the process, and to be sentenced to a minimum of 3 years in prison and a maximum of 7 years in prison, and may also be fined under Section 23(a).
The Myanmar Police Force said that this is the first case of the arrest of the owner of the “Lashio Baegyi” account, Ko Nay Thway, under the Election Protection Law. Currently, actions have been taken against those who have circulated articles on online media to undermine the election process. Until September 2, three cases have been taken actions under the Law on the Protection of Multi-Party Democratic General Elections from Disruption, Obstruction, and Sabotage, said Lt. Gen. Tun Tun Naung, Union Minister for Home Affairs and Chairman of the Central Committee on Security Supervision during the Multiparty Democracy General Election , at a central committee meeting held on September 5.
