Deputy Prime Minister and Union Minister for Foreign Affairs U Than Swe attended the informal meeting between the foreign ministers of Myanmar and neighboring countries, Bangladesh, China, India, Laos and Thailand, held in Bangkok, Thailand, on December 19 at the invitation of the Thai Foreign Minister, according to the statement released by the Information Team of the State Administration Council.
The foreign ministers, deputy ministers and representatives who attended the informal meeting discussed cooperation on peace and stability and security in the border areas as well as cooperation on combating cross-border crime. Union Minister U Than Swe briefed them on the Government’s efforts for ensuring peace, development and democracy and the current progress in the efforts during the discussion at the meeting, the statement said.
U Than Swe met separately with Chinese Vice Foreign Minister Sun Weidong at 2pm local time on December 18 and the Adviser for Foreign Affairs of the Bangladesh Interim Government at 5pm on the same day. On 19 December, he also separately met with the Foreign kMinister of Laos at 1:30pm local time and the Foreign Secretary of the Ministry of External Affairs of India at 2:30pm and the Secretary of Foreign Affairs of the Philippines, who is in Thailand for separate talks, at 5:15pm.
At the meetings, U Than Swe discussed and exchanged views on enhancing cooperation for peace and stability in border areas and combatting cross-border crimes, further strengthening bilateral relations and promotion of cooperation, continuing to work together to maintain peace and stability in border areas, boosting people-to-people relationships, and closer cooperation between the two countries on regional and international fronts.
