Thailand is planning to recruit about 42,000 Myanmar migrant workers to replace Cambodian workers, according to Thai news reports. The Thai Ministry of Labor is planning to bring in 42,000 Myanmar workers and 10,000 Sri Lankan workers to replace Cambodian migrant workers who left Thailand amid border tensions.
The Myanmar and Sri Lankan workers are scheduled to be brought in as soon as this month and will be allowed to work in all industries where there is a shortage of workers, Thai Labor Minister Pongkawin Juangroon Gruangkit said. Cambodian workers are mostly employed in Thailand’s fishing industry, construction and agriculture sectors. Under the current situation, Thai entrepreneurs are planning to replace Cambodian workers who have returned home from their jobs in these industries with Myanmar workers.

This is an opportunity for Myanmar migrant workers who will work in Thailand, so they need to prepare their documents and develop skills to be able to work, said some people who are helping Myanmar workers in Thailand. According to the Thai Ministry of Labor, there are more than 3 million Myanmar migrant workers working with legal documents as of March 2024, and most of the Myanmar migrant workers from the country go to Thailand to work.
