About 1.5 million tonnes of Myanmar corn were exported to Thailand duty-free in the 7 months since the country first received the exemption, according to the Myanmar Corn Industrial Association.
This year, it is targeted to export duty-free about 1.5 million tonnes of Myanmar corn to Thailand, and more than 1.4 million tonnes were exported from February to August 20, so the target is likely to be met, said U Min Khaing, honorary chairman of the Myanmar Corn Industrial Association. Thailand has allowed Myanmar corn to be exported duty-free for 7 months from February to the end of August. Thailand will suspend duty-free purchases for 5 months from September to the end of January, the time of Thai corn season.

Some exports to Thailand are made through the Tachilek border, and most of them are exported via the Yangon-Kawthong-Ranong waterway, traders said. Myanmar corn is mainly exported to Thailand, the Philippines and India. According to records from Yangon’s Bayintnaung Commodity Exchange, the free on board (FOB) price of a tonne of corn on August 20 was between US$250 and 260, while the wholesale price in the Yangon market was over 1,600 kyats per viss.
