World Food Program (WFP) announced on August 26 that it has started distributing food aid to families affected by the floods in Ayeyarwaddy Region.
It is estimated that there are about 500,000 people living in the flooded areas in Ayeyarwaddy Region and it is planned to provide rice and fortified biscuits to about 35,000 affected people.
The Ayeyarwaddy Region is a region vulnerable to weather events such as floods, and the recent floods could significantly reduce rainfed rice yields, said Ms. Sheila Mathew, WFP’s resident representative in Myanmar.
The impact of the flood will not only affect the Ayeyarwaddy but the whole of Myanmar, and WFP is working quickly to reduce food shortages, according to announcement.
Currently, WFP has provided food for 130,000 people affected by the floods in Magway Region, Mandalay Region, Kachin State, Karen State, Sagaing Region, Bago Region and is ready to send necessary aid to Rakhine State as well, WFP has announced.
