The Anti-onlie Scam Bill was drafted with the aim of completely eradicating and taking action against online fraud, said Union Minister for Home Affairs Lt-Gen Nyunt Win Swe. He made the remarks while submitting the bill on combating online scam to the Amyotha Hluttaw on the second day of the second regular session of the third Amyotha Hluttaw held on June 3.
The Anti-Online Scam Bill was drafted to ensure that online scam cannot take root in Myanmar, to prevent it from harming the peace and sovereignty of the country, and to root out and take action against online fraud crimes,said Lt-Gen Nyunt Win Swe.
In addition, the bill is in line with the laws and regulations in force in ASEAN countries such as Cambodia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore and Thailand. The bill was drafted after studying the Cybersecurity Law, Electronic Communications Law, and Telecommunications Laws that have been enacted and implemented in Myanmar.
The Anti-Online Scam Bill stipulates penalties for offenses committed for the purpose of carrying out online scams. Anyone who uses violence, torture, unlawful arrest or detention, or engages in cruel and inhumane treatment in connection with online fraud shall be punished with imprisonment for a term of not less than ten years and up to life imprisonment, or the death penalty. In addition, a fine may also be imposed. Furthermore, if the commission of such an offense results in the death of any person, the offender shall be sentenced to death.
In addition, there are effective penalties for other crimes, which can be up to life imprisonment. If any representative who wants to submit an amendment to the Anti-Online Scam Bill, one can submit his/her name to the Director of the Office of the Amyotha Hluttaw no later than 4 pm on June 5, announced U Aung Lin Dwe, Speaker of the Amyotha Hluttaw.
