A Thanakha culture festival showcasing the custom of wearing Thanakha in the upcountry was held at the Town Hall in Magway on March 23. The festival also included the Myanmar Thanakha Beauty Contest, which aims to promote Myanmar’s traditional Thanakha culture to the world.
A total of 42 young women aged 15 to 25 from universities, basic education schools and departments in Magway Region took part in the contest. The Thanakha culture festival included competitions and entertainment programs as well as Thanakha exhibitions and Thanakha stalls. Currently, efforts are being made for the second time to have Myanmar’s Thanakha culture included in the UNESCO’s World Intangible Cultural Heritage List.
