Sandbags are prepared and placed to prevent flooding in low-lying areas of Mandalay when the Ayeyawady River water level rises, according to the Mandalay City Development Committee.
The sandbags have been prepared along the 12th Street to Shwekyetkya in four townships of Mandalay: Aungmyethazan, Chanayethazan, Mahaaungmye, and Amarapura Township by the river.

In the previous years, such prevention measures were also prepared in the same way, which helped prevent flooding. 8,000 sandbags have been prepared for the areas where river water can flow into, and people living near the river need to report any flooding to the relevant departments in a timely manner. The Mandalay City Development Committee will also dispatch its personnel from the Sanitation Department to the flood-hit areas working together with volunteers, fire departments and other organizations, U Than Zaw Tun, head of the Sanitation Department of MCDC, said.
