The number of pilgrims visiting Taungpula in PyinOoLwin Township, Mandalay Region, has decreased to its lowest point in four years due to various reasons including the current regional situation, Taungpula Sayadaw Ashin Panna Bawga said.

Previously, the number of pilgrims visiting Taungpula on a daily basis was between 700 and 1000, but recently it has dropped to 10 percent, the Sayadaw said. Previously, Taungpula was very crowded with local and foreign pilgrims enjoying the beautiful scenery of the mountains, and taking souvenir photos and videos. It is expected that the number of pilgrims will increase after the exam period for students. It is also learnt that the tradition of giving a feast in charity to the pilgrims is still being practiced there.

When the natural disaster hit the region, the Sayadaw visited the affected areas himself and made donations of cash, clothing, medicine, food and household items including lighting equipment and repaired wells and ponds that were flooded due to the natural disaster. The Sayadaw made donations for the temporarily displaced people as well.
