The Tharapa Gate of the Bagan ancient city will be temporarily closed as the work for restoration and preservation of the original ancient waterways in Bagan Cultural Heritage Site is being carried out, according to the Bagan Division of the Department of Archaeology and National Museum.

The restoration and preservation work of the ancient waterways has been underway since the first week of February and includes improving the flow of water in the moat area from the moat to the Ayeyarwady River and installing water pipes where necessary. U Maung Maung Nan Nwe, deputy director of the Bagan Branch, explained the state of a road to be temporarily closed and other roads being opened during the restoration work.

The restoration and preservation work of the waterways will continue until the fourth week of March with the aim of ensuring perpetual existence of the ancient cultural heritage site, reducing risks of flooding and improving water flow in the Bagan region.
