The Kyauk Myaung Ward in Tamwe Township, Yangon, was crowded with visitors and people splashing water on the afternoon of April 16, the Thingyan Ascent Day.
The streets in Kyauk Myaung Ward were crowded with residents of the neighbourhood splashing water, as well as residents of other townships visiting and splashing water.
Residents of the neighbourhood also welcome visitors offering Studithar( charity for people from all corners) of traditional food.
This year’s Myanmar Thingyan festival is held to commemorate the recognition of the inscription on UNESCO’s List of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, and the Thanakha ritual is also included in the celebration to honour the efforts made to have the Myanmar Thanakha culture to be inscribed on the List of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
Additionally, due to the powerful Mandalay earthquake that struck on March 28, causing damage in Nay Pyi Taw, Mandalay Region, Sagaing Region, Magway Region, Bago Region, and Shan State, this year’s Myanmar traditional Thingyan will be celebrated a peaceful Thingyan, in accordance with traditional culture, without the joyous singing and dancing.
