19th Street, Latha Township, Yangon, was crowded with people playing with water and enjoying relaxation on the evening of April 16, the end day of the Thingyan Festival.
In addition, a walking Thingyan was held at Maha Bandoola Park Road in front of the City Hall in Yangon, and many people were seen there playing with water on the end day of Thingyan.
During the Thingyan period, only some small Thingyan pandals were seen in Yangon with a small number of Thingyan revellers, and children were seen playing with the water only in the streets of the neighborhoods.
This year, the Myanmar traditional Thingyan festival is held in recognition of being included in the list of UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage, and Myanmar’s Thanaka cultural tradition is part of holding the Thingyan festival this year to honour the efforts to have the Myanmar Thanaka culture included in the UNESCO of Intangible Cultural Heritage List.
Moreover, due to the powerful Mandalay earthquake that struck on March 28, which caused considerable damage in Nay Pyi Taw, Mandalay, Sagaing, Magway and Bago regions and Shan State, this year’s Thingyan is held as a peaceful Thingyan in accordance with traditional culture without the joyous singing and dancing.
