18 ancient buildings collapsed in Mandalay due to the strong earthquake that struck on March 28, according to the Department of Archaeology and National Museums (Mandalay Branch) said.
A field survey is being conducted to restore the damaged ancient buildings in original form. Among the buildings that were damaged by the earthquake, religious buildings were the most affected and will be repaired on a priority basis, said U San Htun Aung, Deputy Director of the Department of Archaeology and National Museums (Mandalay Branch). He said that the repair and maintenance work will be carried out in accordance with the recommendations of the Myanmar Earthquake Committee. He said that since it is the rainy season, the collapsed ancient buildings have been covered with rain covers to prevent rain from entering, and urged the public to take care of the rain covers and to maintain and protect the rain covers so that they don’t disappear.

There are 11 ancient sites in Mandalay Region, and a total of 1,528 buildings were damaged by the earthquake including 118 in Mandalay, 99 in Amarapura, 33 in Myit Nge, 600 in Inwa, 280 in Pinya, 17 in Meiktila, 246 in Plaek, 55 in Myin Sai, 51 in Makkhara, 15 in Inyong, and 14 in Mong Mone.
