Local residents in Tachilek are worried about the sudden rise of water levels of Mae Sai Creek between Tachilek and Mae Sai on the Myanmar-Thailand border. The Mae Sai Creek’s water levels rose after heavy rains on April 29.
The creek overflowed in the low-lying areas of Tachilek, Poon Htun, Talot, Maka Hokham and Sanhsaing (B) wards, causing flooding.

In previous years, houses were washed away by the strong flow of the mountain torrent, and the residents are worried that this year will be the same, a Tachilek resident said. Relevant officials are also warning residents in low-lying areas where water can flow in.
The Department of Meteorology and Hydrology has issued a statement at 6 pm on April 28 that rain is expected to fall across the country including Yangon Region until May 4 with isolated heavy rains in some areas. Therefore, the public has been advised to be aware of weather events such as untimely rains, strong winds, thundershowers, lightning strike, lightning flash, hail fall and landslides.
