The Japanese Embassy in Yangon has released a statement warning that online scammers may be targeting Japanese nationals with the use of Japan nationals and Myanmar nationals who speak Japanese.
In Japan, there have been a series of cases where people, who have met friends through online games and social media in Japan but have never met in person, are being introduced to work in foreign countries such as Thailand and Cambodia. They are eventually taken to online scamming camps in Myawady, Myanmar, to commit online fraud. Those who arrive at these camps are constantly monitored and forced to commit fraud, and if they do not meet the work quota, they are tortured.

Therefore, the Myanmar Embassy in Japan warns against being lured into a job that requires using the Japanese language through fiends who have been met at online games and social media without meeting in person. Those who have encountered such cases are urged to consult with their families and the Japanese Embassy in Myanmar and be especially careful not to be deceived by online scams. The Japanese government is also working closely with relevant authorities in Thailand and Myanmar, the statement said.
