Locals in Inlay region, Nyaung Shwe Township, southern Shan State, said they were facing difficulties in rebuilding homes damaged by the Mandalay earthquake that struck on March 28.
Rescue and relief workers said that the earthquake caused extensive damage in villages in Inlay region, with more than 500 houses destroyed. Although rehabilitation and reconstruction work is underway, locals say that the shortage of carpenters is a problem. Some residents whose homes were damaged by the earthquake are building temporary shelters at schools and on floating islands while others are staying with relatives.
Locals are asking for donors to help them rebuild their homes before the rainy season begins. In addition, they are facing difficulties in drinking water because wells were damaged by the earthquake. The Mandalay earthquake that struck in the afternoon of March 28 has caused widespread damage to Nay Pyi Taw, Mandalay and Sagaing regions and Inlay, Aungban and Taunggyi in southern Shan State with many buildings destroyed, fatalities and injuries.
