The Department of Archaeology and National Museum is working on enabling Myanmar Thanakha to be in the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage List, according to the department.
Measures are being taken to re-submit Myanmar’s Thanakha to UNESCO before March 31 after Myanmar Thingyan was included in the World Intangible Cultural Heritage List. The department is working to obtain the opinions of various ethnic groups to include Myanmar Thanakha in UNESCO List, Daw Sandar Khin, chairperson of Myanmar Cultural Heritage Preservation Committee, said.

The Myanmar Thanakha was submitted for inclusion in the World Intangible Cultural Heritage List in 2020. Since there are requirements on data, the application is rewritten in accordance with UNESCO’s instructions and will be submitted in time, an official of the department said.
The Thingyan Festival, Myanmar’s traditional New Year festival, was designated as a World Intangible Cultural Heritage on December 5, 2024, in Asuncion, Paraguay.
