Four people including the thief and his wife, who stole gold jewellery and cash worth 435.4 million kyats were arrested in Chanayethazan Township, Mandalay, according to the statement released by the Information Team of the State Administration Council on May 5.
The incident occurred on April 18 in a ground floor apartment of a 7-story building on 32(B) Street between 70th and 71st Streets, Yanmyolon Ward, Chanayethazan Township. The owner reported to the police that 200 million kyats in cash and 235.4 million kyats worth of gold items were missing from the apartment on April 18. The case was opened at the relevant police station, and an investigation was conducted to arrest the thief.
The authorities went to arrest the suspect, Lwin Ko Oo, a resident of Letpan Village, Tatkon Township, Nay Pyi Taw, on April 26 but did not find him at his house in the village. According to his wife Thin Thin Soe, Lwin Ko Oo had bought a motorbike in Tatkon with the stolen money. On further interrogation, as it was learnt that the rest of the stolen money and gold ornaments were buried in a sack with Thin Thin Soe’s father, sister and brother-in-law on April 21, 1.4 million kyats in cash and various gold ornaments weighing 9 kyattha, 10 petha and 5 yway were seized as evidence on April 26, the statement said.
Lwin Ko Oo was arrested at a guesthouse in Zabuthiri Township, Nay Pyi Taw, on the evening of April 27. He was found to have 1.27 million kyats in cash and various gold ornaments as evidence along with a motorbike, his National Scrutiny Card, a National Scrutiny Card under the name of Myo Thu with his photo and five mobile phones.
According to the statement of the arrested Lwin Ko Oo, while working at a construction site in Mandalay on April 18, he broke into the ground floor of a 7-story building near his workplace and stole cash and gold items. From there, he returned to Tatkon by passenger bus and asked his wife to hide the cash and gold items, the police statement said.
The police statement also stated that effective action has been taken against the four people including Lwin Ko Oo, who stole the cash and gold items, and Lwin Ko Oo’s wife, who hid the evidence for the theft, in accordance with the law.
