The National Defense and Security Council meeting held on the morning of January 31 decided to extend the nationwide state of emergency for another 6 months.
The meeting was attended by Pro Tem President (Duty) Defence Services Commander-in-Chief Senior General Min Aung Hlaing, Pyithu Hluttaw Speaker U T Khun Myat, Deputy Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services Commander-in-Chief (Army) Vice-Senior General Soe Win, Union Minister for Defence General Maung Maung Aye, Union Minister for Home Affairs Lt-Gen Yar Pyae, Union Minister for Foreign Affairs U Than Swe, Union Minister for Border Affairs Lt-Gen Tun Tun Naung, special invitees SAC Secretary General Aung Lin Dwe and Joint Secretary General Ye Win Oo.
Pro Tem President (Duty) Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services Senior General Min Aung Hlaing explained the state’s defence and security situations, the country’s ongoing efforts to maintain peace and stability, and the situation on the implementation to strengthen the multi-party democracy and the construction of a union based on democracy and federalism, the efforts to increase the production of agricultural and livestock products, and the efforts to promote the education sector to accelerate the country’s development.
Additionally, there remains works to successfully hold the general election that all aim for, and it is still in need of peace and stability to hold a free and fair general election. Therefore, he presented to extend the term of office for another 6 months to perform the necessary works without losing momentum. Afterwards, the members of the National Defense and Security Council and specially invited persons discussed and reviewed the presentation by the Acting President and Commander-in-Chief of the Myanmar Armed Forces.
Afterwards, Pro Tem President (Duty) Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services Senior General Min Aung Hlaing and all the members of the National Defense and Security Council unanimously resolved to extend the term of the state of emergency for six months under the Section 425 of the Constitution of the Republic of the Union of Myanmar ( 2008 ) and concluded the meeting. It has been declared that the election will be held this year and by extending the state of emergency the preparations for the upcoming elections may begin in the coming months, political analysts have commented.
