The government has allocated over 128.604 billion kyats from the government budget for natural disaster-related losses, Chairman of the State Administration Council Prime Minister Senior General Min Aung Hlaing said .
He made the remarks at a coordination meeting of the SAC held at the meeting hall of SAC Chairman’s Office in Nay Pyi Taw on May 19.
Myanmar has suffered many losses due to natural disasters such as epidemics, extreme weather and earthquake, and the people have also suffered personal losses. In 2023, Cyclone Mocha hit Rakhine State causing losses of 534.146 billion kyats, and the government has provided over 73.797 billion kyats in reconstruction assistance. The heavy rains caused by Typhoon Yagi in 2024 caused losses of over 466.231 billion kyats, and 54.807 billion kyats were provided for reconstruction, the Senior General said.

The Mandalay earthquake that struck on March 28 caused losses of 3629.288 billion kyats, and reconstruction and rehabilitation work is still underway. If these events had not occurred, the country would have been able to carry out development tasks more than now. Therefore, it is necessary to make preparedness and prevention measures to minimize the damage caused by natural disasters. In addition, as the damage caused by armed conflict is also huge, it is necessary to take steps to achieve peace, he said.
