The government will provide necessary support in line with national policies to be able to implement the Popa Wind Power Project in Kyaukpadaung Township, Mandalay Region, as soon as possible, Chief Minister of Mandalay Region U Myo Aung said at a briefing on January 14 regarding the facts about of the project, which will generate 200 megawatts.
The Popa Wind Power Project will be jointly implemented by Zeya & Associates Company of Myanmar and Rosatom Renewable Energy of Russia. The State is making efforts to meet its electricity needs by using renewable energy sources in various ways, and the wind power project is one of them, the Chief Minister said.
The Popa Wind Power Project is among the eight wind power projects that have been signed as MoUs with the Ministry of Electric Power. During a visit to Russia in 2023, the Minister for Electric Power of the Union of Myanmar has said that it is planned to develop 18 wind power projects nationwide with the potential to generate 2,260 megawatts of electricity. Currently, due to low power generation, only about 50 percent of the capacity can be generated on average.
