Union Minister for Industry Dr. Charlie Than said that the Ministry of Industry was supporting the recruitment of foreign experts and the import of necessary equipment to repair cement factories damaged by the Mandalay earthquake.
He made the remarks at a coordination meeting of the Cement Manufacturers Association held on April 10.
Five out of nine cement factories in the country were damaged by the Mandalay earthquake, the union minister said.
The Mandalay earthquake that struck on March 28 damaged four cement factories in Mandalay Region and one in the Nay Pyi Taw Council area.
Dr. Charlie Than said that as the earthquake caused extensive damage to buildings in Nay Pyi Taw and regions of Mandalay and Sagaing, a large amount of cement was needed for reconstruction, and that it was urgent to restore the operation of cement factories.
Before the Mandalay earthquake, nine cement factories in the country produced over 6.3 million tons of cement last February.
