China will oversee the ceasefire between the Myanmar Tatmadaw and the MNDAA, and will facilitate the smooth handover of Lashio, stated Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Guo Jiakun.
He made this announcement during a regular press briefing on April 22, in response to a reporter’s question.
Guo Jiakun emphasized that China and Myanmar are traditional partners, and that maintaining peace and stability in northern Myanmar is in the best interest of both nations and their peoples. He reiterated that China respects Myanmar’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.

China has been actively supporting Myanmar in advancing the peace process in northern Myanmar, following requests and recommendations from relevant organizations within the country. Guo Jiakun mentioned that China recently sent a ceasefire monitoring team to Lashio at the joint invitation of both parties, aimed at helping implement the agreements reached between the Myanmar government and the MNDAA during the Kunming Peace Talks.
He noted that both sides expressed their appreciation for China’s constructive role in maintaining peace and stability in northern Myanmar. Looking forward, China will continue to facilitate the Kunming Peace Dialogue process, hold discussions to end the fighting in northern Myanmar, and collaborate with all parties in Myanmar to ensure peace and stability along the China-Myanmar border.
