People’s Party Chairman U Ko Ko Gyi said that he expected that the election would be held this year and that the handover of power to the elected government may coincide with the start of the next fiscal year. He made the remarks at a press briefing held at the People’s Party Headquarters on January 26.
As handover of the power to the elected government is usually carried out in coincidence with the fiscal year, the change could coincide with April 1, U Ko Ko Gyi said. As Chairman of the State Administration Council Prime Minister Senior General Min Aung Hlaing has said that plans are under way to make the upcoming election dignified and that the election will not be held with just one-third of the constituencies but efforts could be made to hold it with more than that.

In addition, Ko Ko Gyi said at the press briefing that he and Dr. Aye Maung did not discuss the matter on increasing the number of conscripts eligible for military service under the People’s Military Service Law during the two-day meeting with the NSPNC on January 23 and 24. Senior General Min Aung Hlaing has said that efforts are being made to hold the elections this year and that the elections can be held first in constituencies where they can be held and then in the remaining constituencies in phases.
