The Yangon Electricity Supply Corporation (YESC) said that the townships in Yangon Region will be divided into 3 groups and will be supplied 4 hours of electricity and 8 hours of alternating outages, starting from December 5. The groups will be into 3 groups: (A), (B) and (C) and electricity will be given 4 hours of supplies and 8 hours of alternating outages.
Therefore, every group will be given 4 hours electricity supply and 16 hours outages daily, said some of the residents in Yangon. Due to such a long power outages, the employees have difficulties in cooking meals, said a resident from Bahan Township.
YESC announced that only half of the electricity demand can be produced and the high demand for electricity is caused by the destruction of power lines, inability to transmit and distribute full power by the hydropower plants and thermal power plants, inability to produce power due to natural disasters, the lack of operation capacity of installed machines due to reduced gas quota.
Currently, the country’s power demand is 4400 megawatts per day but the power generation capacity was only over 1700 megawatts on January 5, 2025, so it was not able to produce even half of the demand.
