STORY: Malaysia’s former prime minister Muhyiddin Yassin is set to be charged in court with sedition on Tuesday (August 27) for allegedly touching on the topic of royalty during a campaign speech at a recent local by-election.
Earlier this year, charges of abuse of power against the ex-prime minister were reinstated by a Malaysian appeal court, to which Muhyiddin pleaded not guilty.
Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, who came to power in November, last year ordered a review of government projects worth billions of dollars approved by his predecessor Muhyiddin, including COVID-19 relief programmes, alleging they did not follow proper procedures.
Muhyiddin has accused Anwar of orchestrating a political vendetta, which the premier has rejected. Muhyiddin was prime minister for 17 months between 2020 and 2021.
