Violence intensified on the streets of Rotherham on Sunday (August 4) in the latest wave of unrest after three girls were killed in a knife attack at a children’s dance class in Southport in northwest England last week.
Anti-immigration protesters hurled objects at police and broke several windows at a hotel that has been used to house asylum seekers.
Some protesters carried Union Jacks and England flags and chanted profanity at police officers and towards the hotel.
The murders in Southport were seized on by anti-immigrant and anti-Muslim groups as misinformation spread that the suspected attacker was an immigrant and a radical Islamist. Police have said the suspect, Axel Rudakubana, 17, was born in Britain.Media reports have said his family is Christian.
In an address to the nation, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer unilaterally condemned the recent anti-immigration riots that took place, calling them “far-right thuggery”.
He then took questions from journalists, where he promised that the rioters would be met with swift judicial action.
