Thousands in India’s western city of Pune were evacuated from low-lying areas on Sunday (August 4), as water levels in two major rivers spiked amid torrential rains.
Footage by Reuters partner ANI showed overflowing dams and surging rivers after city officials opened the floodgates.
Rescuers were also seen using inflated rafts to evacuate locals to safety.
India’s seasonal monsoon rains, which start at the end of May, bring respite after a scorching summer but have also triggered widespread flooding in recent years.
