Cremation fees for funeral service will increase at the cemeteries run by the Yangon City Development Committee starting from February 1, according to the relevant cemeteries and free funeral services. The current fee will be raised from 10,000 kyats to 15,000 kyats and the mortuary fee from 5,000 kyats to 9,000 kyats per day.
“The current cremation service fee will be 10,000 kyats to 15,000 kyats. The mortuary fee will be 9,000 kyats. Both of these have been officially announced. The main reason for the increase is the power outage. The mortuary will only work if there is electricity. If there is no electricity, it seems that a generator will have to be turned on. That is why the fee will be raised,” an official of a free funeral service in Yangon said.

It is learnt that the wooden coffin used for cremation could be bought for 15,000 kyats if close to free funeral services or the cemetery staff but if it is directly bought from the municipal staff, the price will be about 50,000 kyats. An official from Htein Pin Cemetery also confirmed that cremation service fees will increase in YCDC-run cemeteries starting from the end of this month. Currently, the total cost of cremation of a body currently costs about 45,000 kyats if a free funeral service directly helps conduct funeral service of the body, and it costs about 500,000 to one million kyats if those who can afford to cover the cost for funeral service on their own.
In the Yangon City Development area, the fees for funeral service will increase at all four locations: North Okkalapa Yayway Cemetery, Shwepyitha Kyu Chaung Cemetery, Hlaingthaya Htein Pin Cemetery, and Dagon Myothit (South) Kyi Su Cemetery. But Thanlyin Amoe Ni Cemetery is not on the list because it is not run by YCDC. Currently, Kyi Su and Htein Pin cemeteries conduct funeral service for 20 and 30 bodies daily and Yayway Cemetery 40 to 50 bodies, according to free funeral services in Yangon.
