The Department of Public Health, Ministry of Health have issued a warning saying that as the rainy season will soon arrive, it is necessary to be careful to avoid the occurrence of severe diarrhea.
Severe diarrhea is transmitted through contaminated water and food and is most common during the early and late rainy seasons.
Symptoms of severe diarrhea include watery diarrhea, rice-water stool, vomiting, rapid heartbeat, elastosis, sunken eyes, dry mouth, tongue and lips, muscle cramps and unconsciousness. If diarrhea is not treated in time, it can be fatal. Therefore, if the disease is suspected, it is necessary to report it to the nearest health centre or clinic or hospital for effective treatment, the statement said.
As severe diarrhea is a preventable disease, it is necessary to wash hands regularly and pay special attention to environmental hygiene to prevent mosquitoes and flies from breeding. In addition, food should be cooked thoroughly before eating and should be covered securely to prevent flies from entering. If the disease occurs, it is necessary to take electrolyte drinks to stay hydrated before going to the hospital. If those drinks are not available, it is recommended to drink 1 liter of boiled or clean water with 8 teaspoons of sugar and 1 teaspoon of salt, the statement said.
