The Yangon City Development Committee’s Engineering Department (Roads and Bridges) announced that construction for the Thingyan Pavilion in front of Yangon City Hall, and the preparation for walking Thingyan have been halted and cancelled.
Preparations for the Thingyan Festival to be held for the first time been listed as a World Intangible Cultural Heritage have been underway since last March, with the construction of the Thingyan water throwing pandals called mandats in front of Yangon City Hall and the walking Thingyan on Maha Bandula Park Road.

Applications for the construction of water throwing mandats in Yangon Region were permitted to submit from March 25 to April 7, and there are about 7 companies that have submitted applications.
The powerful earthquake on March 28 left many dead and injured, as well as damaged buildings. Therefore, preparations for the water throwing mandats and the walking Thingyan have been canceled. The companies that had submitted applications for the construction of water throwing mandats will no longer build them, said an official from the Engineering Department (Roads and Bridges).
Similarly, the Thingyan Festival will not be held in the People’s Square and Park in Yangon, but only traditional offerings given in charity for all corners will be held without music and dance.

The State Administrative Council Information Team announced that the first Myanmar traditional New Year Thingyan festival to be held as a world intangible cultural heritage will be organized peacefully and in accordance with Myanmar culture without music and dance.
During the last 2024 Thingyan Festival, the township administrative departments in 33 townships within the Yangon Region municipal area built water throwing mandats and held the Thingyan Festival.
