According to the Ministry of Commerce, a construction materials trade fair will be held to sell construction materials, including iron and steel bars, and cement, at affordable prices for rehabilitation and construction works. A coordination meeting to open the trade fair was held on April 29.
Union Minister for Commerce U Tun On said that the trade fair will be held to enable people to purchase quality and guaranteed materials at affordable prices and quickly construct buildings, rebuilding earthquake-damaged buildings to be resilient to an earthquake of magnitude 8.
The trade fair will be held in Nay Pyi Taw, Mandalay and Sagaing regions.
Construction materials, including iron, steel and cement, are essential for rehabilitation and construction work in earthquake-affected areas. When investigating the earthquake-affected areas, it was found that the prices of these materials were high and there were differences, so the trade fair will be opened to ensure that they are of high quality, at the right price and in sufficient quantity and on time, said Union Minister for Industry Dr Charlie Than.
Cement companies are also planning to increase production due to the rising demand for cement. Currently, the price of a bag of cement has risen to more than Ks. 50,000, making it difficult to buy the material, said a construction worker in Yangon. To quickly repair residential buildings, factories roads and bridges damaged by the earthquake, cement factories, iron and steel bar factories, corrugated sheet factories, plywood factories and brick factories are also being provided with the necessary resources to resume full operation.
