Myanmar will submit an application for the tradition of eating tea to be recognized as a World Intangible Cultural Heritage next year, Daw Sandar Khin, chairperson of the Myanmar Cultural Heritage Preservation Committee, said. This will be the third for the country to submit its tradition to be included in the UNESCO Intangible World Heritage List.
According to the statistics until March 2024, there were more than 2,000 national level intangible cultural heritage sites in Myanmar. Of these, cultural heritage sites will be submitted to UNESCO by relevant social organizations. Currently, only one application per year can be submitted to UNESCO, Daw Sandar Khin said.

Myanmar’s traditional New Year Thingyan festival was designated as a World Intangible Cultural Heritage on December 5, 2024. The tradition of applying Myanmar Thanakha will, for the second time, be submitted to UNESCO in March this year.
The sites of Pyu ancient city states of Sri Kestra, Hanlin and Beikthanoe were designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2014 and the Bagan region in 2019.
