A magnitude 4.2 earthquake struck near Mawlaik, Sagaing Region, at around 6:32 am on May 29, according to a statement released by the Department of Meteorology and Hydrology.
The earthquake was centered at around 6:32 am on May 29, 47 miles west-northwest of the Kanbalu seismic station and 30 miles southeast of Mawlaik, Myanmar, at a depth of 85 kilometers.
According to the department, there have been 180 aftershocks since the Mandalay earthquake until May 25. The aftershocks occurred in Nay Pyi Taw, Mandalay, Sagaing and Shan State with the lowest magnitude being 2.8 and the highest magnitude being 5.9.
The Mandalay earthquake caused extensive damage in Mandalay, Sagaing, Nay Pyi Taw and Inlay regions destroying ancient heritage sites, temples, pagodas, schools, departmental buildings and residential buildings. In addition, the Mandalay earthquake has killed 3,739 with 5,104 injured and 68 people missing in six regions and states, according to the statements released until May 27.
