Deputy Prime Minister Union Minister for Planning and Finance U Win Shein said that more than three million members have been granted over two billion kyats of loans by domestic and foreign companies that have been licensed to operate microfinance business.
He made these remarks at a meeting of the Microfinance Business Supervisory Committee held on January 13.

Until January 2025, there were 174 microfinance companies including 53 foreign companies, 112 local companies and nine partnership ones that had been licensed to operate microfinance businesses. These companies have lent over two billion kyats to 3.228 million members in 15 regions and states. Microfinance companies need to comply with the laws, regulations, procedures and directives when providing financial services to low-income people, Union Minister U Win Shein said.
It is necessary for not only local banks but also microfinance companies to cooperate to provide the necessary loans for the development of MSME businesses, the minister said.
In addition, the committee approved three local companies to be licensed to operate microfinance businesses, four companies to be allowed to increase their capital, three corporate life insurance agent licenses, and three companies to expand their territories.
