Although domestic sugar factories are regularly operating, the production slightly falls, according to sugar industry community. Currently, 26 out of 29 factories in the country are operating.
Although the factories were in operation, due to transportation difficulties, processing sugarcanes into slab-sugar without sending them to sugar mills and more production of slab-sugar as the price of slab-sugar was more profitable than that of sugar, the production of sugar slightly fell, said U Win Htay, Vice-Chairman of Myanmar Sugar and Cane Related Products Association.
Myanmar Sugar and Cane Related Products Association predicted that domestic sugar production would be about 500,000 tonns in this sugarcane season. Domestic consumption of sugar was three tonns and the excessive sugar was used to be exported. But the export of sugar has been decreasing due to falling price of sugar in the international market. In addition, the price has slightly fallen because of decreasing demand in domestic market. The wholesale price was from Ks. 4950 to Ks.5100, according to data from the Yangon Bayinnaung Commodity Exchange.
