Despite the continuous growth in order volume from overseas through the consignment system, the garment industry is taking fewer orders due to a shortage of workers, according to the community of garment industry
Currently, the largest number of garment orders are from European Union countries, and new brand orders are being received from countries such as Japan, South Korea and China.
Since most domestic garment workers have moved to work abroad, the industry is still facing a shortage of workers and is unable to deliver the orders on time, Dr Khin Maung Aye, a garment entrepreneur, said.
If the orders cannot be completed within the specified time, the country from which the order was placed will no longer accept the fabrics or the local garment entrepreneurs will have to offer a discount on the fabrics or they will have to ship them to the relevant country by air. Therefore, they are taking fewer orders in order to deliver new orders on time.
Currently, the most commonly ordered garments from abroad are T-shirts and jackets. The consignment system is a system in which imported raw materials are cut, sewn, repaired, processed locally and packaged as finished products and re-delivered abroad, receiving a commission for these processes.
