The Ministry of Commerce and Industry of India has announced that India extended the policy of allowing free import of Myanmar’s pigeon pea without any quantitative restriction until March 31, 2026.
In view of the continued high demand in India and the need to maintain prices, the policy of allowing free import of pigeon pea and vigna mungo has been extended until the end of March this year.

The policy issued by the Indian government only covers pigeon pea, not vigna mungo, but it is likely to be issued for vigna mungo before the policy expires, U Soe Win Maung, advisor to the Myanmar Pulses, Maize and Sesame Seeds Merchants Association, said. The Indian government has relaxed the restrictions on pigeon pea, green gram and mung bean, which were previously designated as restricted imports, as free imports from May 15, 2021, with a limited period of time.
Subsequently, due to the decrease in rainfall in India’s main pulse-growing states, the production of pulses declined, and in subsequent years, the Directorate General of Foreign Trade of India continued to extend the validity period by issuing notifications.
