The Department of Fisheries under the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Irrigation notified Fishery farmers to take precautions to protect the fishery farms from heat due to extremely high temperature in summer.

The water dry up in summer in fishery ponds due to severely hot weather and fish often suffers disease outbreak and death. Due to the extremely high temperature of the sun, the water in fish farming ponds is polluted causing fish diseases. Therefore, the notification urged to reduce the use of nutrition and overfeeding, increase dissolved oxygen in the water, replenish clean water if the water becomes dry, reduce the number of fish where there is difficult to add new water and avoid transferring fish during the hottest part of the day.

In addition, it urged to keep the fresh water level in the fish pond within 25-40 cm, feed regular meals in moderation avoiding to use fish-feed that cause water pollution, to regularly check for leftover-feed, to arrange reserve ponds to store clean water to exchange fresh water, to store as much water as possible and to regularly check the condition of the ponds and changes of water quality at 6 a.m. every day. The aim of the Department of Fisheries urging fish farmers is to take precautions to avoid any losses, said Dr. Aung Naing Oo, Director of the Department of Fisheries. He also informed to contact the nearest Department of Fisheries whenever unusual changes experience in the fish ponds during the summer.
