Discussions were underway to export surplus cotton from domestic use preparing in accordance with international quality standards, said Myanmar Trade Promotion Organization (MyanTrade). The Workshop on preparing surplus cotton from domestic use to be in line with international standards was held at the meeting room of Myanmar Trade Promotion Organization under the Ministry of Commerce on March 6.

The aim of the workshop was to use good varieties of cotton strain, produce more cotton and yarn and export the surplus cotton to the international market preparing in accordance with quality and standards. Therefore it was necessary to strive cooperatively between and government and private sectors, urged Union Minister for Commerce at the workshop. It has been targeted to produce 539,656 tonns of cotton cultivating 640,000 acres in the 2024-2025 fiscal year .

Some of the market experts predicted that if the current cotton raw material can be produced into finished products, the import of cloth can be reduced. Cotton is mainly grown in the dry regions of central Myanmar, such as Sagaing, Mandalay, Magway, and Bago Regions (western part), and is also grown in some townships in Shan, Kachin, Kayin, Chin, and Rakhine states.
