Dominic Thiem said he had no regrets about how his career panned out as he bid adieu to the U.S. Open – the tournament in which he enjoyed his greatest success – following a 6-4 6-2 6-2 first-round defeat by American Ben Shelton on Monday (August 26).
The 30-year-old Austrian won the U.S. Open in 2020 before suffering a wrist injury in 2021 which kept him out of action for months and saw him slip down the world rankings.
Earlier this year, he announced he would retire at the end of the 2024 season, after playing at his home Vienna Open in October.
2020 US OPEN CHAMPION, DOMINIC THIEM, SAYING:
“I mean, everything was a bit different. I tried to enjoy it, I tried to like really soak up every moment in this stadium. It was really nice. But I think I was pretty… I was able to focus on the match. But of course obviously I’m not having that level anymore what is required to really go head-to-head with players like Ben. This I also knew before. So, of course I tried to enjoy it as much as possible but still I was focusing on the match pretty good.”
