The construction of a new city gate at the entrance to Sittwe city in Rakhine State is now about 50 percent complete, according to the State Government. The new gate is being built to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the founding of Sittwe city by a committee chaired by Rakhine State Minister for Natural Resources U Myint Soe.
The design of the new gate has been in preparation since August 2025, and the Minister for Transport of State Government U Aung Kyaw Moe, state Attorney General U Hla Thein, U Kyaw Zan Maung from the Cultural Association, U Aung Hla Thein (Researcher), and writers have met twice, according to Rakhine State Attorney General U Hla Thein. The old city gate of Sittwe city was destroyed by Cyclone Mokha in May 2023.
