Earthquake-resistant buildings should be built in Myanmar in order to reduce the number of casualties and damage caused by earthquakes, according to Dr. Yin Myo Min Htwe, Deputy Director of the Earthquake Division of the Department of Meteorology and Hydrology.
Earthquakes are natural disasters that cannot be accurately predicted and can occur at any time, so the public should be educated about earthquakes frequently and earthquake simulation exercises should be conducted in advance. Casualties and damage are caused not because of earthquakes but because of the strength of the buildings they live in, earthquake-resistant buildings should be built, Said Dr. Yin Myo Min Htwe.

Myanmar has many smaller faults in addition to the Sagaing Fault, and the Indian plate is subducting into the Myanmar plate in the western and northwestern parts of the country, resulting in regular earthquake activity. The 7.7-magnitude Mandalay earthquake that struck on March 28 was caused by the Sagaing Fault, said Dr. Yin Myo Min Htwe, deputy director of the Earthquake Division of the Department of Meteorology and Hydrology.
