Yangon Region plans to plant over 1 million acres of monsoon paddy this season, and more than 1 million acres have been planted until the end of July, according to the Yangon Region Agriculture Department.
Paddy is grown in Dagon Myothit, Thanlyin, Twantay, Hmawbi, Hlegu, Taikkyi, Mingalardon, Insein and Alone districts, and high-yielding varieties and local varieties are being grown for domestic consumption and export. Monsoon paddy is usually planted from early July to late September, and short-duration varieties are usually harvested in late October and long-duration varieties in late January.

Although farmers rely more on summer paddy than monsoon paddy, monsoon paddy is a seasonal paddy and farmers are to grow it as a rice with a certain yield due to the constant rain. This year, farmers are planting the new Aung Naing Toe rice variety produced by the Department of Agriculture (Yezin) on 5,000 acres, and as the average yield per acre is more than 80 baskets, it is a rice variety that farmers are interested in this rainy season.
Yangon Region’s rice self-sufficiency rate was more than 102 percent in 2024, and the Yangon Region Agriculture Department said that the paddy cultivation will increase more than the target in 2025.
