A crocodile alert has been issued to villages in Bogale Township, Pyapon District, Ayeyawady Region, which are connected to the Meinmahla Kyun Wildlife Sanctuary, according to the Meinmahla Kyun Wildlife Sanctuary Office.
On July 2 and 3, two villagers were attacked by crocodiles in the creeks of Chaunbyegyi Village Tract and Hlaylonkwe Village in Bogale Township. It is learnt that to prevent such incidents from happening again, officials of the Meinmahla Kyun Wildlife Sanctuary Office have conducted daily awareness measures on the crocodiles to residents of the rivers and creeks bordering the Meinmahla Kyun Wildlife Sanctuary using loudspeakers to warn people of the danger of crocodiles.
The office has warned that since June to August is the breeding season for crocodiles, the Meinmahla Kyun Wildlife Sanctuary, where freshwater and saltwater crocodiles thrive, is a high-risk area for the danger of crocodile.
According to the warning, people living in these areas are advised not to tend their pets in the banks of creeks, villagers and children are advised not to play in the creeks, jump into the water, wash clothes on the banks or bathe for long periods of time in the creeks. Fishermen who hunt for fish and shrimp are also urged to be very careful. In addition, they are advised to keep bushes and vines on the banks clear so that crocodiles do not have shelter on the banks. The office has also told people not to scare crocodiles by throwing sticks or stones at them if they see them roaming in the water.
